It was built between 1866 and 1870 during King Norodom’s reign. The palace marked a crucial shift of the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh. Perched atop the ancient citadel, Banteay Keo. The palace faces east. , It is strategically located at the union of the Tonle Sap River and the Mekong River. Therefore, it is rightly named Chaktomouk as it symbolizes the divine Brahma.
